Railways Illustrated : The Video was released in March 2004, as a joint production between Railways Illustrated magazine (published by Ian Allan Publishing) and LocoWatch Video. The programme also represented our first release on DVD.

Visitng J15 No. 65894, from the North Norfolk Railway, is seen on a pick-up freight rounding the curve at Kinchley Lane on the Great Central Railway, as featured in Railways Illustrated : The Video
The programme takes a look at the UK and European Rail networks today and within the 60 minutes takes a look at the final days of Mail by Rail, including a view of one of the last manned TPOs at York in January 2004.

Our line feature follows the Hope Valley route in Derbyshire. The Hope Valley carries a wide array of passenger traffic and also sees heavy freight workings from the quarries around Buxton and the cement works at Hope, near Edale. Courtesy of Lafarge Cement, we’re able to take you behind the scenes at Hope and view this fascinating industrial rail network.

Following the style of Railways Illustrated magazine, heritage steam is included with views of locomotives hard at work on the Keighley & Worth Valley and Great Central Railway's - plus mainline steam in action including views of No. 6233 Duchess Of Sutherland and No. 6201 Princess Elizabeth hard at work.

Pendolino and Voyager units feature briefly, before we look at the development and building of the General Motors Class 66 locomotives with several views of the type in action with EWS, Freightliner, GB Railfreight and Direct Rail Services. DRS locomotives are used on the Grangemouth - West Midlands service for the Malcolm Group. A look at the terminal at Grangemouth is included, along with views of the trains at work on the National Network.

We conclude with a section on French railways and specifically, the section of line between Amberiau and Modane, near the Italian border - a true haven for the rail freight photographer!
